Western Sahara is sparsely populated and makes for a long drive down to Mauritania. The Atlantic coast line was spectacular though and whenever the drive turned too monotonous we headed of the highway to our right and enjoyed the views of deserted beaches, sheer cliffs and the rough surf.

Dakhla on its long peninsula made for a relaxed stopover and is very popular with kite surfers.

Make sure you have enough fiches with you containing personal and vehicle details and so on as you will be asked for it constantly and it saves heaps of time. Ours were in English which was never a problem though French is preferable.
